US Stock Market Hours in Every Time Zone (Live Status)

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq both operate on Eastern Time, with regular trading hours of 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday (excluding market holidays). These hours are always quoted in Eastern Time, regardless of the time of year.

In Central Time, the market is open 8:30 AM–3:00 PM. In Mountain Time, 7:30 AM–2:00 PM. In Pacific Time, 6:30 AM–1:00 PM. In Alaska Time, 5:30 AM–12:00 PM. These four gaps stay constant year-round since all five zones shift for daylight saving together.

Hawaii-Aleutian Time is the exception: since Hawaii doesn't observe daylight saving, the market opens at 4:30 AM and closes at 11:00 AM Hawaii time during the winter months (Eastern Standard Time), but opens an hour earlier — 3:30 AM to 10:00 AM — once the mainland springs forward to Eastern Daylight Time each spring.

Pre-market trading typically runs from 4:00 AM to 9:30 AM Eastern, and after-hours trading typically runs from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM Eastern, giving West Coast traders a much earlier and later window than the standard session alone. On early-close days, after-hours generally ends at 5:00 PM Eastern. Individual brokers set their own extended-hours windows, so check yours.

For traders in India, the 9:30 AM–4:00 PM Eastern session runs 7:00 PM–1:30 AM IST while the US is on daylight time, and 8:00 PM–2:30 AM IST once the US falls back, because India doesn't change its clocks. In London, the session is 2:30 PM–9:00 PM UK time for most of the year, but during the gaps when the US and UK change clocks on different dates (two to three weeks in March, about a week from late October to early November), it runs 1:30 PM–8:00 PM. The NYSE and Nasdaq close for ten holidays a year: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. A holiday that lands on a Saturday is observed the Friday before, and one on a Sunday the Monday after (New Year's Day on a Saturday is the exception, with no Friday closure).

Trading ends early, at 1:00 PM Eastern, on the day after Thanksgiving and typically on Christmas Eve and July 3 when they fall on weekdays around the holiday. The calendar in the live section above lists every closure and early close for the current year.

Every major US exchange schedules itself in Eastern Time because New York has been the country's financial center since the 19th century; traders elsewhere are expected to convert to their own zone rather than the exchange adjusting to them.

This convention extends to earnings calls, IPO pricing announcements, and Federal Reserve policy statements, nearly all of which are scheduled and reported in Eastern Time regardless of where the company or the audience is physically located.

Traders on the West Coast and in Hawaii routinely build their entire workday around this Eastern-anchored schedule, since the market's hours don't shift to accommodate any zone but the one New York happens to be in.
