Best Time to Call the East Coast From the West Coast

From the West Coast's perspective, the East Coast is three hours ahead. That means the East Coast's workday is already well underway by the time a typical West Coast office opens.

By 9 AM Pacific, when many West Coast offices are just starting their day, it's already noon on the East Coast.

To reach someone during their 9 AM–6 PM Eastern workday, call between 6 AM and 3 PM Pacific. The most comfortable window — avoiding the very early Pacific morning and the East Coast's end of day — is roughly 7 AM–11 AM Pacific (10 AM–2 PM Eastern).

Calling after 2 PM Pacific means it's already after 5 PM Eastern — cutting it close to the end of the East Coast workday. Calling before 6 AM Pacific means the East Coast hasn't started its day yet.

A 9 AM Pacific call reaches East Coast contacts at noon — right at the edge of their lunch hour, which is why many West Coast schedulers nudge such calls slightly earlier, to around 7–8 AM Pacific (10–11 AM Eastern), instead.

A 4 PM Pacific call, meanwhile, lands at 7 PM Eastern, well after most East Coast offices have closed for the day, making the late Pacific afternoon one of the least reliable windows for reaching East Coast colleagues.

West Coast teams that regularly work with East Coast clients often build their morning schedule around this gap deliberately, front-loading East-Coast-facing calls into the first two or three hours of the Pacific workday before shifting to purely local business in the afternoon.

Because the three-hour gap never changes, a fast way to sanity-check any West-to-East conversion is to add three hours to whatever time you're looking at on the West Coast — if that result falls within roughly 9 AM to 6 PM, it's very likely within the East Coast's normal business day too.

This trick breaks down only for calls involving Hawaii, Alaska, or a US territory alongside the East Coast, since those zones don't maintain a fixed three-hour-style relationship with Eastern Time the way Pacific does.
